The ice came off on 4/22/17 this year and every year it does, we get the itch to get out and catch the bows spawning on the shores. Ken and I slept in and didn't get up to the res until 10:30am. We started out throwing midge patterns from the shore with our 6 weights. Fishing was slow...water temp was still sort of cold since the ice just came off a few days ago. After about an hour of no action, Ken threw on a black wolly bugger and caught a planter rainbow from the shore. So, of course, what do i do? I throw on a black wolly bugger as well. My 2nd cast i started stripping it back from the shore and caught a 19 inch cut that was pretty healthy lookin, here are some pics of that fish:
About 30 min after that, things started to pick up a little. I think later on in the day with the temp rising helped. I think it took a little while for the midges to start hatching. So i switched back to midge patterns and we caught these fish all on the black jack!
Needless to say Jimmy and I have not done enough fishing that past couple of years. We saw a window of opportunity open up to run up to Pine Valley Utah and fish a little river (stream) called the Santa Clara river. The water was flowing pretty good because of the snow melting. Jimmy first tried a san jaun worm and had a few bites. I put on a zebra midge with no luck. Then Jimmy through on a bead prince nymph and started catching a few small browns. I through a black wooly bugger to see if I could dead drift it or strip it across a few holes. I didn't catch anything until we moved up to the big hole right below the spill way of Pine View Reservoir. Here a few pics of our catch.
A a little body of water over by Kanab Utah. I guess the fishing has recently opened back up on this little reservoir and the Brown Trout have grown nicely. Most of these were caught from the shore in the last 3 weeks. The rainbow was caught in the fall.

We have had it on the Calendar for months, Ice Fishing Dec 16th and 17th 2016! Only to show up with it raining and blowing about 40 mph on Friday ha! Crazy ice sheets being blown together and ice chunks being beat apart by the wind. When we showed up on Friday only about half the lake had ice on it and it was deteriorating fast.

We ended up messing around in the little cove on the north side of the lake. The wind was not blowing as hard and their was around 4 inches of ice still. After that we headed back to the cabin and called it night.

Luckily a cold front moved in over night and it was about 1 degree in the morning with just a little breeze. There was still a ton of open water but enough ice on the north east side that we could fish. There was probably around 5 inches. Fishing was really slow but we ended up catch a few nice fish and had a great time.
We ran up to Yankee Meadow Reservoir last Thursday Nov 3rd and we were able to fish for 3 hrs before we had to be back in St. George for some meetings. The weather was great, a little bit of snow on the ground in the shade, it was beautiful up there. We caught probably 10-12 fish and we caught them on a variety of things. We started out catching them on wolly buggers; Purple and Olive. We later caught the rest of them on egg patterns, in particular, a glow roe. Here are some pics from our trip!
Kolob Reservoir - April 14th 2016We posted anything for a while, we've been too busy with work and family to go fishing.. I know, I know.. priorities.. haha. We finally got an excuse to leave work early on a Thursday for a quick "birthday fishing trip" It was my birthday that week and I convinced Ken and Jimmy to head up to Kolob for half a day and I think we're all glad we did. The road was great on the way up to Kolob, and there was a little snow on the bank of the reservoir and a few ice glaciers floating around. We started along the shore by the spillway, we tried all kinds of different flies, different colors of buggers, leach streamers, egg patterns, san juan worm, but nothing worked until ken pulled out the "Black Jack" The black jack is a kind of midge that has two white wings. (shown below). Ken worked his way out to the point and started immediately slaying it, he had already caught 3 before Jimmy and I made our way up the shore trying all kinds of different things. Rainy's Flies is the only place that we know who sells the Black Jack Fly, It was a Fly designed by Gilbert Rowely. Shout out to Gilbert! Thanks Buddy!

The Pink one worked better than the green one. We only had a few of them, and some of them were already hammered from last year when ken killed it, you might remember it from this clip here.. We fished until all the flies we had were literally destroyed. Nothing else worked as well or as consistent. This was the only fly they wanted. We did catch a few using a jig on a spinning rod, (for fun) and 1 on an egg pattern.

The fish are starting to spawn and they are extremely fat! We were all surprised at the number of good sized quality fish that we were catching consistently. I don't think that we've ever caught that quality of fish consistently as we did on that short trip. Out of all of them there were only 2 or 3 that were smaller planter sized, All the rest were beautiful colored fish! It was a windy day and kinda chilly, but we didn't really notice the wind or the cold too much. We were just happy to be catching fish! I'll let the video below speak for itself! Thanks for watching!
We stayed for 3 days and we hit up, Panguitch Lake, Asay Creek, Mammoth Creek, and Yankee Meadows. I never have been a big believer of the moon effecting fish's eating behaviors, however after this trip I think i'm convinced that after a Full Moon they just slow down. It wasn't the greatest catching trip, but it was a great fishing trip... Here's a report of the areas we hit up.

We got up to the cabin and settled and then headed down to some access points before Asay Creek meets the Sevier River.

DWR's Site that shows access points on map. There were 4 of us fishing and we caught maybe 10 total but they were all pretty small. 6-12 inches. I think there was one that was 15 or 16. There is only a limited area that can be fished because there's private land all around. We think that it probably gets fished a lot. It was still fun and pretty! On our way back we headed back to mammoth creek road and stopped and fished on mammoth creek for about an hour. We all saw a lot of fish and we tried almost every type of fly but none of us caught any.

October 28th - 2nd Day

The 2nd day we decided to hope in our little fishing boat and try our luck dragging around some streamers on some sinking line. I've never seen it so slow at Panguitch lake, we fished for at least 3-4 hours and maybe landed 4-5 fish between all 4 of us. So then we decided to head over to Yankee meadows for the rest of the day and try our luck over there. Jimmy and Christian drove back through Brian Head with the boat, and Ken and I jumped on our dirt bikes to ride over the back way. Clear Creek Canyon has a dirt trail over from Panguitch lake to Yankee Meadows, but it's pretty rocky and pretty rough in some areas. There's a cool look off at the top where you can see Yankee Meadows, Brian Head Area, and the Valley, here's a couple pics that we took at the top.

we saw a cool Bald Eagle over by where the stream comes into the reservoir and decided to get closer, as we got closer we saw a ton of flashes of red shooting off all over the place. The Brook trout were spawning next to the inlet. we stopped for a min. Since we scared them all a way we decided to take the boat back to the dock and get our waders on and go fish from the shore. We saw some fish feeding on little midges off the top so we threw on some different midges to test it out and no luck, we tried streamers, dry flies, and just about everything we had. Jimmy decided to try a egg pattern and finally landed a nice size brook trout in the spawn. Here's a pic of it.

October 29th - 3rd Day

The 3rd day was a bust! We decided to go fish Mammoth Creek, right below the town of Mammoth. We hiked a couple miles and hardly even saw any fish. I think all of us saw about 2 or 3 fish total. none of us caught anything.

After that Jimmy, Christian and I decided to give it one more go on panguitch lake, since we were getting sick of eating hot dogs, and we had planned to eat fish for dinner that night. We fished for about 3 hours, it started to snow and the wind was blowing about 20 miles an hour. But we were pretty sick of hot dogs so we kept fishing. We were able to land 2 pretty good sized fish that we took back and cooked up. I think they were caught on purple or maroonish streamers.

All in all it was a fun trip, and great company!

We were lucky to be accompanied by Ken's brother Niels! It was fun to have him come out and fish with us and hope he keeps coming to fish with us! :)

We got to Kolob around 8:30 and started to throw "the black jack" out at them from the shore. That was not working so we started throwing other midge patters at them and did not have success with those either. Ken threw on a black wolly bugger and caught a rainbow right after he put it on so of course weall put black wolly buggers on but did not have any luck, must have been a fluke :)

We continued to walk the shore line and site fish for spawners. We finally found 2 spawning beds just right off the shore and decided to throw out some egg patterns under an indicator. We caught a few right in the beds, here are some pics of one of the nicer ones...
We mostly fished between the boat ramp and the spillway for a couple of hours, before we left we started fishing the same egg patterns at the inlet that is to the north of the ramp and caught 4-5. So, needless to say, i was pretty stoked to get down there and try my luck at a fish that size. So, i drove down and met him in Price and we headed up there on 2/3/15. Started fishing at around 8am and it was pretty slow for the first little bit. It was a full moon the night before so my opinion was that they had been feeding all night long but who knows if that is true or not...Anyway, we moved around a bit and met up with DWR fish biologist Calvin Black and fished next to him and the fishing picked up. We were using white tub jigs tipped with cut bait. We caught about 18-20 splake in 5 hrs and they ranged from 14-19 inches long. Here are some pics from the trip:
I
have been itchin to get up to Lake Blanche just to hike but then did
some research to find out that people actually fish it and catch
Brookies. I started the hike around 1:30 and got up there a little
after 3pm. I fished for 2 hrs before i headed back. It is a 6.1 mile
hike that climbs over 2500 ft in elevation. I caught about 25 brookies
in the 2 hrs i fished, 75% of them were on a green Caddis dry. Beautiful
fall colors and scenery, great fishing, fun fish to catch, biggest was
10 or 11 inches, most were 6-8inches.

Caught some nice bows and my first ever Wiper! I had not idea those wipers would fight so hard it was a lot of fun and probably the highlight of the trip. We fished all morning and when we decided to head in I told Jimmy I am going to just troll this muddler minnow in. Well after about 5 mins that wiper hit that minnow and took my line out all the way to the backing and then took another probably 50 yards of backing until it let up. I thought I had a 27 inch rainbow on. We here there are some nice Wipers over in Newcastle Res so we will have to get over there and see if we can catch any. We will keep you posted. Here are a few pics from Minersville.
We were trying to target some big browns but we didn't really have the right setup or time. We caught some little bows and then we had heard that if you use some cut bait that you can catch some nice ones. We have a buddy that caught a 17 pound brown out of this reservoir.

There are a ton of shiners in this lake and it is no wonder that the fish grow so big. We actually caught a couple of shiners and then cut them up and fished with them under our indicators for second just to kind of goof around. Funny thing is I caught a little 10 inch brown doing this. I didn't get a pic of him though he slipped out of my hands before we could get one.

We were talking though and we think that if you get up there towards the evening and fish a mouse pattern, larger streamer, or even some kind of cut bait you might be able to snag a big brown. The camp host came by and said he has seen a 2 foot brown swimming around the shore a few times and he just wants to throw a rock at it or something cause he can't catch it. Let us know if you ever get up there and catch a big one!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0Little Reservoir, Fishlake National Forest, Utah 84713, USA38.2599667 -112.489307838.2568497 -112.49435030000001 38.2630837 -112.4842653tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4093479071554672986.post-13748293299380830422014-05-22T15:27:00.000-07:002014-05-27T16:13:08.556-07:00Kents Lake Beaver Mountain UT/ Minersville ResWe headed up to Kents Lake on the Beav last Thursday, May 22nd to a little fishing. Jimmy and I met up in Beaver Thursday afternoon and then headed up the canyon. We had never really fished much on the beaver so we were excited at what the fishing trip would entail. We camped in the campground at Kents Lake and fished there Thursday night, Friday morning, and Friday night. Thursday night we started fishing around 6pm and caught around 30+ fish I would say fishing was hot. We caught some bows, splake, tigers, and brookies. Nothing really big mostly around 12-14 inches really fun though because we caught so many. We took my little fiberglass boat that I think I am going to now call, "A river runs through it" because there are few new holes that I didn't know about towards the front of the boat which literally water came in the front and flowed to the back of the boat forming a little river ha!

On Friday morning we fished Kents again caught a couple nicer Tigers one 16 and one almost 17. Then we headed down to Little Reservoir hoping to snag a big brown. I guess there are some nice brown trout that have been pulled out of Little Res over the years. Jimmy has a friend that caught a 17 pound brown from there. Well we weren't so lucky we caught some small bows, some little shiners, and one brown measuring about 10 inches. After we fished Little Res we headed back up to Kents and fished the rest of the evening til dark catching another 20 or so fish from the boat. It seemed to be really good fishing on the far side of the lake in a little cove we liked to call the Glory Hole!

Sat Morning we woke up early and headed down to Minersville Res to see if we could catch some nice Rainbows. We caught 2 small bass, 6 bows, and 1 wiper that gave me the fight of my life. We figured we caught 8 different types of fish on this trip which was really fun, Tigers, Bows, Splake, Brookies, Brown, Shiners, Bass, and Wiper.

Here are some pics from our trip, enjoy!
Lower Provo River 3/21/14
by Jimmy Sorenson

Brett Wright had heard that the Provo was on fire so he called me and twisted my arm to go with him. We got on the water right at "sun-up" and started throwing "dries". We could not get any takers so I switched over to a nymph rig. I caught a brown on an egg pattern with a san juan dropper. He took the egg pattern! Here is a video of him...

Brett caught a few on streamers. Then we moved upstream a couple hundred yards to a nice hole where Brett had caught a few on a mating midge pattern. I threw my egg pattern in and hooked up with 3 browns in like 10 min. I did not hook them very well and all 3 got off. I think they were taking it out of aggression and they were being territorial to another egg coming into their "hole".

We decided to head downstream under and fish just out from under a bridge with a big back eddie. We fished there for the rest of the afternoon and caught them on zebra midges, soft hackles, and size 20 BWO's. We caught about 30 fish in the 6-7 hrs we fished so it was a good day to be on the water!
We heard the ice was off at Minersville and decided to hit it up. We left around 6 am from St. George and had our flies wet at around 7:45am. We took Nates boat because the report said it would be better from the boat. Fishing was really hot in the morning but then slowed down around 11 or 12. We caught about 14 or 15 fish total 2 cuts! the rest were rainbows. Biggest of the day was a 23 inch bow. My Dad caught one that was almost 22 maybe 1/4 inch off :) The rest were around 15-19 Green streamers seemed to be the ticket haven't hear any other reports lately so not sure what everyone else has been experiencing. Here are a few pics from our trip, Enjoy!
We have had such good success at Panguitch Lake ice fishing when the ice first comes on that we thought we would give Minersville a shot and see if it would be hot too. Well I can say that it was not hot it was really slow. I am not sure if this is because you can't use bait here or if Minersville is just typically slow in the winter.

We caught 8 fish all day in 8 hours. Although I did have a big one on that broke my pole and I lost him right when I got him to the hole. It was probably the biggest fish I would have ever caught. Jimmy also had a nice one on that broke his line. So the fish are bigger but fishing was slow.
It was a full moon the night before so this could of played into things as well, who knows? We caught most of them on white and brown tube jigs. Nate did catch one on a little ratfinke type jig. We bought some smelly jelly and used this not sure if it helped or not. There were about 5-6 other fisherman there all catching about 1 an hour.

One of the guys up there had a picture of a fish from the day before that somebody caught that was about 27 inches and fat!! We were hoping to catch the same but the biggest fish we caught was around 19 inches. Here are some pics from our trip.
So when I heard that the Panguitch lake had already been iced over I was excited to get up there. Ken and Jimmy had been last year about the same time and I didn't get to go with them but they had said they caught about 50 fish. I told myself I couldn't pass this first ice on prime time this year. I wanted Ken and Jimmy to come with but they were both tied up this time, they both really wanted but couldn't. I was able to take a good friend Mike Bringhurst and we headed up about 6:15. We got their about 8:30 and we were all set up by about 8:45.

I had my line in for about all of 2 or 3 minutes when BAM "Fish On" I pulled out a long 18 incher. I felt like this was going to be a trip to remember, and it was. From then on we kept pulling them out about every 5-10 minutes. It was fun to be able to see them from the hole in the ice and see when they were going to hit. The ice tent gave us a huge advantage. I was using a tube jig with a mill worms and Mike was using a pinkish ice fly with mill worms, but they were so aggressive I think they would have eaten about anything we through down that hole. In fact one fish was so aggressive that is bit the side of the tube jig and wouldn't let go, I never hooked him but he was so clamped down on that jig that I was able to pull him right how of the hole with out ever hooking him.

We didn't catch anything over 18 inches. We probably had 2 or 3 that were 18 inches. The rest averaged about 16 and 17. It was just fun to be able to see that much action. We got a lot of great footage. View our video below, also feel free view our Facebook page and share our posts.
I threw the pole in just in case I had a some time to throw a fly in. Got up there around 2:30 it ended up being around 5:00 by the time I was done with the Realtor. I decided to throw the gear on and fish for a min.

I headed over by the boat ramp on the south side of the lake right by where they have the boat docs. The water level is low but looks like it has been rising a little. I started fishing with a blackjack but didn't get any bites. I then decided to throw a green streamer on. That was the ticket. I ended up catching 8 fish in the next 45 mins. They were all planters about 10 -12 inches but had fun anyway. Fishing usually pics up before ice on. I was surprised that I didn't snag any bigger fish but I kind of couldn't keep the planters off the line long enough. I did find out that I have a leak in the right leg of my waders though so I need to fix that, about froze my foot off ha!

Sorry don't have any pics maybe next time.

So we were itching to do a Boulder Mountain fishing trip this year. It worked out that we could go on Sept 26-28. Jimmy couldn't make it but we decided to go anyway. Even though he is the life of the part we couldn't pass on the opportunity.
Nate and I headed up Thurs morning, stopped in Richfield for some supplies and then we were on our way. Dad decided to come and so he booked a cabin for us just at the base of the mountain. We stayed there one time before a couple of years ago. It is called Uncle Earls Cabin. Great place to stay close to the mountain and the north slope road.

We arrived the cabin around 3pm unloaded our bags and the ranger and headed up the north slope road. We had planned on fishing Honeymoon for that evening. A cold front had moved in and it was lets say just a little chilly. We were thinking this should be good for fishing. It tooks us about 35 mins to get to to Fish Creek and then another 20 mins to hike over to Honeymoon. We fished for a couple of hours but didn't even get as much as a bite. We saw just a little bit of action but not much. So I am not sure how many fish are in there. On the way back to the Ranger we fished Fish Creek for maybe an hour. We saw a lot of action but couldn't get any to bite.

Friday we got up ate and headed up the mountain again. We drove over to green lake but it didn't look very promising so we decided to fish Blind. We have heard that Blind can be good and holds some big fish. We drove as far as we could on the Ranger and then got out and hiked the rest of the way. We ended up packing our little raft and electric motor in. It sounds crazy but we though why not it is a half of a mile and it might have us a better chance of catching some fish. We fished all morning I caught a little brookie, cut, and bow on a purple streamer. We stopped for lunch and built a fire. It was about 25 degrees all day with wind and a few small snow flurries. After lunch we went over to the south side of the lake fished from shore but didn't have any luck. We decided to get back in our raft and drag some streamers around while it was getting dark. Dad ended up catching a couple, Nate caught one, and I caught one more brookie that 18 incher above. I think this fish made the trip for me. I caught it on a black marabou jig.

Sat we drove over the Pine Creek hiked up and fished for about 2-3 hours. Saw a lot of fish but couldn't get them to bite. It was kind of a slow fishing trip. For 3 days of fishing I think we only caught 7-8 fish total out of all 3 of us. Here is some footage from the trip Enjoy!
We had an opportunity to go on Thurs Sept 19th. We had such a fun time at Minersville last fall that we thought we would give it a try. Jimmy drove down from SLC and I drove up from St. George to meet him there around 7:30 am. We fished for about an hour and half with no bite. I think we were a tad too early. I guess that is what you get when you are impatient. The water temp was about 65-67 degrees still so it is no wonder the fishing is still kind of slow right now. We tried streamers, and midges, no dry flies. After an hour and half with not even a bite we decided to run up to Yankee Meadows Reservoir. Nate was just on his way up since he couldn't get away as early so we called him and told him to meet us at Yankee. Yankee is significantly higher in elevation 8,660 according to the DWR website. Here is the DWR webpage for Yankee it can give you a little more info:
http://wildlife.utah.gov/hotspots/detailed.php?id=1154783537

The water temp was about 55 degrees which I hear is when the trout start perking up and becoming more active. We fished for about 3 hours and caught 11 fish so it was a lot better than Minersville. They were hitting purple, green, and black wooly buggers. We caught around 5 bows, 5 cuts, and 1 brookie. It was gorgeous up there as the leaves were changing and it seems like fishing will pick up in the next couple of weeks as it gets even cooler. Also you will probably do better with midges in the next couple of weeks. Here are few pics from our trip.
We got up there first thing in the morning and started fishing at Lilly lake. I was using my intermediate line and was snagging on the bottom on certain parts of the lake so i know it is not a very deep lake. We caught a few there...I caught a small tiger trout there and Bryan caught a few rainbows. After about an hour or so we thought we should try our luck at Mirror Lake. So we packed up and headed over to Mirror a couple of miles down the road. The leaves were changing up there, such a beautiful highway! A storm was trying to roll in on us, the clouds were moving faster than i have ever seen clouds move! I hooked up my sonar to my floattube this time and found that most of the fish were either hugging the bottom or sitting on top. Fish were mainly marking in the 13-14 ft range, did not find any marking at deeper depths. We were using wooly buggers, purples, browns, blacks, etc...I think we ended up catching around 12-13 fish. We caught 4 species that day, rainbows, cuts, a brookie and one tiger. The fish were not big by any means, probably ranging from 10-12 inches
Nate and I are heading up to the boulder next week and we are trying to make sure we know the best place to go and what to use. Here are few other sites that we have found helpful:
